A Wolverhampton primary school which has been recognised as one of the very best in the country is celebrating an excellent Ofsted inspection.

Spring Vale Primary School was recently named in the Sunday Times Parent Power list of the top 1,000 schools, and now has even more reason to celebrate following the publication of its latest Ofsted report.

Inspectors visited Spring Vale in January, and in their report published last week, found that 'pupils achieve highly'. Teachers ensure children 'secure the important knowledge that they need to communicate, read, write and calculate at the earliest stage,' with leaders 'relentless about ensuring that all pupils keep up'. As a result, pupils are 'very well prepared' for the next stage in their education.

Pupils 'flourish' thanks to highly effective support, and 'make rapid progress', with achievements in tests significantly above national averages for reading, writing and maths. Inspectors also found that disadvantaged pupils 'achieve far higher' than their peers nationally, while pupils with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) make 'rapid progress from their starting points'.

Leaders have designed a 'highly effective' curriculum, with teaching across the school described as 'highly effective'. Staff have 'excellent' subject knowledge and 'intelligently adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils', with children able to 'develop their subject‑specific vocabulary and use it with sophistication'.

Inspectors praised the school’s inclusive and positive climate, saying 'pupils show excellent learning behaviours... They are courteous, polite and follow the school rules consistently', and they feel 'safe and cared for at school'.

Personal development at the school is equally strong. Inspectors found that the programme 'makes a tangible difference to pupils’ lives' and creates a 'culture of genuine belonging'. Pupils are 'well prepared for life beyond the classroom'.

The school 'puts inclusion at the heart of its work', and leadership and governance were also strongly commended, with inspectors finding that 'leaders at all levels are passionate about providing the best support and care possible for pupils' and put them ‘at the centre of everything they do'.

Under Ofsted’s renewed inspection framework, Spring Vale Primary School is judged to be at Strong Standard for Achievement; Attendance and behaviour; Curriculum and teaching; Inclusion; Leadership and governance; and Personal development and wellbeing, and at Expected Standard for Early Years. Safeguarding standards met, with a strong culture of vigilance and pupils feeling safe.

The success follows Spring Vale being named the 244th best school in the UK, and the 16th best in the West Midlands, in the Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026, based on Key Stage 2 results in reading, grammar and maths in 2024.

It, along with other schools within the Lykos Multi Academy Trust, also recently received praise from Bridget Phillipson, Secretary of State for Education, for demonstrating strong attainment outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

Headteacher Chris Blunt said: "We are delighted that the hard work, dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence of our children, staff and community have been recognised recently. “We look forward to continuing the journey of success within the Lykos Trust as the school enters a new and exciting chapter in its history.

Councillor Jacqui Coogan, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: "This report confirms Spring Vale Primary School is a highly inclusive, ambitious and exceptionally well‑led school where pupils enjoy learning, feel valued and are extremely well prepared for the next stage of their education.

"It is a fantastic outcome for Spring Vale, coming hot on the heels of its recognition by the Sunday Times and praise from the Secretary of State for Education for its work with disadvantaged pupils. My congratulations go to everyone on their continuing success.”
