This World Suicide Prevention Day, the City of Wolverhampton Council is highlighting the help and support available to parents who may be struggling.
Becoming a parent is one of the most demanding, life-changing experiences a person can go through – and for some, the emotional impact can be overwhelming.
Suicide remains the leading cause of direct maternal death between six weeks and 12 months after birth, accounting for 39% of deaths of mothers in that period, while, overall, the rate of maternal deaths in the UK has increased by 15% in the last decade.
And it's not just mothers who are affected. Fathers experiencing poor mental health during the perinatal period are up to 47 times more likely to be at risk of suicide than at any other time in their lives.
Councillor Obaida Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community, said: “These sobering statistics underline how much support is needed for new parents during this vulnerable time.
“Parenting can be incredibly hard, and it’s okay to admit that. If you're worried about your partner or loved one – if they seem low, withdrawn, or not themselves – please don’t wait.
“You don’t have to be an expert or know the exact ‘right’ thing to say. Being there and showing that you care can make all the difference. Try to listen with empathy and without judgement to help the person open up about how they’re feeling, and don’t be afraid to ask someone if they’re feeling suicidal.”
Other help is also available. Encourage your loved one to talk to their midwife, health visitor, GP, or any healthcare professional. You can also visit one of Wolverhampton’s eight Family Hubs, where a wide range of support services are available for both parents – find out more at www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/family-hubs.
The Family Hubs Parent and Infant Wellbeing Team also offer a range of weekly activities to help parents with their wellbeing and build positive bonds with their infants, including Baby Massage, Baby & Me wellbeing group, coffee mornings and one-to-one befriending. To find out more, please email fhparent.infantwbteam@wolverhampton.gov.uk.
There are a range of online resources that offer advice on looking after your mental health and wellbeing, including Best Start in Life – visit https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/your-mental-health/ for more details.
The theme of World Suicide Prevention Day 2025, taking place today (Wednesday 10 September) is the second year of 'Changing the Narrative', calling on individuals, communities, and organisations to Start the Conversation – breaking down stigma and fostering understanding through dialogue.
