The popular Yo! Active programme, which provides free access to physical activity opportunities for children and young people across the city, is to be extended.

The City of Wolverhampton Council has gone out to tender for a provider to deliver and manage the programme – in conjunction with the local authority – from April 2026, and to ensure its continued success in breaking down financial barriers to sport and exercise.

Launched last year by the council, WV Active and Wolves Foundation, Yo! Active is a public health initiative that offers a wide range of free physical activity sessions across WV Active centres and community venues.

It is open to all children and young people aged 0-18, with eligibility extended to 25 years for care leavers and those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

More than 17,500 young people have signed up and are able to take their pick from activities ranging from swimming and gym and court hire to multi-sport sessions, basketball and bespoke activities for under-fives.

The new contract will initially be for a period of one year but can be extended to up for four years, subject to funding.

Councillor Obaida Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Community, said: "Yo! Active has been a fantastic success story for Wolverhampton, opening up opportunities for thousands of children and young people to enjoy sport and physical activity without the worry of cost, and helping young people to stay active, healthy, and socially connected.

"By extending the programme, initially for one year with a view to extend, we are investing in the health and wellbeing of our city’s future generations and ensuring that every young person – whatever their background or ability – has the chance to thrive.”

Meanwhile, children and young people can enjoy a spook-tacular half-term through Yo! Active. Its holiday programme is now live, with highlights including Active Werewulfs, Multisport Mayhem, Little Pumpkin Playtime and a Spooky Sportsday.

At the same time, WV Active Bilston - Bert Williams is launching new swimming lesson taster sessions, offering youngsters a fun, no-pressure introduction to the water. Led by qualified instructors, these short sessions are perfect for beginners to build confidence, try out the facilities, and experience the joy of swimming before committing to a full course.
