City school celebrates 90th anniversary

Pupils celebrated their school's 90th anniversary with a nod to one of their former pupils, Slade's Don Powell.

Villiers Primary School completes its 90th full school year this month, and Year 6 pupils marked the occasion with a musical production called We Will Rock You.

A week of party activities also saw children enjoy bouncy castles and learn about the history of their school, with each year group focusing on a different decade.

When the Prouds Lane school first opened, George V was King, Ramsey MacDonald was Prime Minister and Forest Mars produced the first Mars bar.

The school went on to become one of the largest primaries in Wolverhampton and, over the last 90 years, has only had eight headteachers. Last year it was rated Good by Ofsted and this summer achieved some of the highest Key Stage 2 SATS results in its history.

Headteacher Lisa Rogers said: "We were very excited to celebrate our school's 90th anniversary year, and to take our children on a trip down memory lane as they learned about the history of our school."

Councillor Chris Burden, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: "I would like to wish Villiers Primary, and all its pupils, staff and parents, a very happy anniversary. Here's to the next 90 years!"

Pupils join Councillor Chris Burden, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, and headteacher Lisa Rogers to celebrate Villiers Primary School's 90th birthday.
