Acclaimed author Onjali Q Raúf MBE paid a visit to SS Peter & Paul Catholic Primary School recently to officially open its new outdoor amphitheatre.

Reading Ambassadors from across the school had the unique opportunity to interview the author of The Boy at the Back of the Class, asking insightful questions about her life, ambitions, and experiences.

She also read from her latest novel, The Girl at the Front of the Class, sharing stories that reflect kindness, courage, and empathy, before leading a workshop for pupils about her charity work in refugee camps and discussing how small actions can make a big difference to the lives of others.

The highlight of the day was the official opening of the school’s bespoke outdoor amphitheatre, a space designed to celebrate reading, performance, and storytelling. Joined by pupils who completed the Summer Reading Challenge, Ms Raúf cut the ribbon to open an exciting new chapter in the school’s commitment to creativity and literacy.

Headteacher Jenny Byrne said: “We are incredibly honoured to have welcomed Onjali Raúf to SS Peter and Paul. Her visit has inspired our pupils to see the power of words, compassion, and service in action.

“As a School of Sanctuary, staff and pupils were delighted to be able to enrich our experience and understanding of the need to prioritise a culture of welcome and belonging.

“And we were delighted that she was able to open our new amphitheatre, a place where stories, voices, and imaginations will come to life for many years to come.”

Councillor Jacqui Coogan, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “Activities such this remind us of the transformative power of education, and I’m thrilled to see Wolverhampton schools creating such inspiring opportunities for our young people.”
