Chance to get creative in library’s writing competition

May 5, 2020

Children can get creative and help make a new book by taking part in a free online writing camp later this month.

Wolverhampton's Library Service is teaming up with GoWrite for the week-long activity taking place from Monday 18 May, 2020.

The Creative Writing Camp is open to children aged eight and over, and each child taking part will receive a copy of the finished book - including their own ending.

To take part, children will read the opening or winning chapter each day, and then write about what they think should happen next. Everyone involved will be able to vote for their favourite piece of writing each day, which will be chosen as the chapter to be published in the book, meaning there are five chances to become a winning writer.

Councillor Harman Banger, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: "While our libraries are physically closed during the coronavirus emergency, we're doing all we can to ensure we can still provide a service to library members young and old at home, and we are delighted to be teaming up with GoWrite to host this Creative Writing Camp later this month."

Though all 16 council-run libraries are currently closed, there are still plenty of ways in which people can access services virtually.

Library members can get hold of the latest collection of bestselling eBooks and eAudiobooks – for free – via the BorrowBox library on any Apple iOS and Google Android phone, tablet or computer. Titles can be borrowed for free for a period of three weeks, at which point they can be renewed or will automatically be deleted from people’s devices, meaning customers won’t be fined for forgetting to return books on time. To sign up, visit www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/libraries.

Anyone missing their reading groups can join in book discussions online through the library service’s Facebook and Twitter pages – www.facebook.com/wolveslibraries and www.twitter.com/wolveslibraries – using the hashtag #StayingInReadingClub.

‘Virtual’ librarians can answer people’s queries online using the hashtag #virtuallibrarian on Facebook and Twitter, while anyone looking for recommendations can find staff reviews using the hashtag #LibrarySmashHits. Meanwhile, the ever popular storytimes for babies and children have moved online, with a new story posted every week on social media. Go to the Facebook playlist at https://bit.ly/3agbasD or search #OnlineStoryTime to view the latest video.

It's free to join Wolverhampton’s libraries and people can sign up on line. Please visit www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/libraries or follow on social media at www.facebook.com/wolveslibraries and www.twitter.com/wolveslibraries for more information.
