Cracking new library club for young computer coders

September 13, 2016

A new coding club is set to open at Bilston Library this week, giving children the chance to develop their computer programming skills.

Run by volunteers from the University of Wolverhampton's Computer Science course, the after-school club will meet every Wednesday from this week at 4.30pm and 5.30pm.

The Code Club is open to children aged from nine to 11 and gives them the chance to use Scratch, the graphical programming language, to design their own computer games, animations and websites.

It is being launched following the success of the Code Club at Central Library, which started last autumn and takes place on Mondays at 4.30pm and 5.30pm.

Councillor John Reynolds, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: "Being computer literate is so important in this day and age, and the Code Club is a fantastic way for younger library users to get to know how computers work and to develop their programming skills.

"The sessions, delivered by experts from the University of Wolverhampton, are interactive and fun and give children the chance to use Scratch to create their own interactive stories, games and animations.

“The Code Club at Central Library is very popular and I am sure the new club at Bilston will be equally successful. I would like to thank the enthusiasm of the volunteers from the University of Wolverhampton, without whose expertise we would not be able to provide this much appreciated service.”

Raul Sutton, of the University of Wolverhampton’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, said: “The University of Wolverhampton is very pleased to be a partner in the Code Club initiative. Volunteers support these exciting extra opportunities for local children interested in learning more about computing to follow their interests.”

The Code Clubs are free and all equipment is supplied. Places are limited – to book, please call Bilston Library on 01902 556253 or Central Library on 01902 552023.
