Bookworms can take Big Friendly Summer Reading Challenge

July 26, 2016

It’s that time of year again when libraries in Wolverhampton are encouraging young bookworms to take on the Summer Reading Challenge.

The theme for this year's event is The BFG - Big Friendly Read - to commemorate the centenary of author Roald Dahl’s birth and the launch of The BFG film in cinemas.

Young people signing up for the Summer Reading Challenge, a national promotion by the Reading Agency, are encouraged to read six books throughout the summer, collecting rewards along the way and ultimately a special certificate (subject to availability).

Children aged up to 12 can take the challenge at their local library, with more than 20 events taking place over the next few weeks.

Councillor John Reynolds, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: “Our libraries have been supporting the Summer Reading Challenge for more than 10 years and it is always very popular with families.

“Children are encouraged to collect rewards, stickers and finally a medal to celebrate their success in reading especially themed books throughout the summer – this year’s theme is the ever popular tale of The BFG.

“We’ve got a wide range of activities taking place across the city, and I’d encourage families to join in the fun. It doesn’t matter if they are not yet a member of a library; it’s totally free to join and only takes a few minutes.

"In addition, several of our libraries are Poke stops, so anyone in search of Pokeman might like to visit their local library!"
