Inspectors note improvements at Kingston Centre

March 18, 2016

Inspectors say leaders at a pupil referral unit are continuing to take "effective action" to move it out of special measures.

Ofsted carried out a monitoring visit at the Kingston Centre, in Whitmore Reans, on Wednesday 24 February, 2016, and noted a range of improvements which have taken place in recent months.

The centre, which helps prepare young people for a move back into mainstream education where appropriate, was placed into special measures following an inspection in February 2015.

Inspectors found that new headteacher Adam Price, who took up his position in January this year, had made a "successful start to his tenure at the Kingston Centre", establishing his credibility with staff and pupils, and helping  staff to feel "energised to improve their work further".

Interim headteacher Francesca Cannarella, who joined in September 2015, was credited as having played a "significant role in the many improvements" at the centre, and pupils now "get a better quality of education" because staff and pupils are clear what is expected of them.

Good relationships between staff and pupils have created an “environment to promote positive learning", with pupils themselves saying they are "learning a lot more" at the Kingston Centre.

Councillor Claire Darke, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Education, said: "This monitoring inspection report is further evidence that the Kingston Centre is moving in the right direction and is on course to move out of special measures.

"I'd like to thank the staff for their hard work over the last few months, led firstly by interim headteacher Francesca Cannarella and now by her successor Adam Price, which is leading to sustained improvements."
